Sheffield

Sheffield is no stranger to acting talent, with the likes of Dominic West, Richard Coyle and Charlotte Tyree all hailing from the city. It’s talent like this that Ruth Carney had in mind when she opened the doors to Carney Sheffield over a decade ago.

Since then, the Academy has gone on to become an integral part of Sheffield’s artistic scene and performance community, offering weekly classes, workshops and summer schools.

Past students have gone on to professional drama schools such as LAMDA and the Guildford School of Acting, and have performed in award-winning shows such as Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Shrek The Musical. Student TV credits include Emmerdale, Death In Paradise and Casualty.

Carney Sheffield offers industry standard training, opportunities to perform and a fun, relaxed environment to learn.

Youth Stage (ages 9 – 12)

Students in our Youth Stage focus on the focus on a variety of skills including vocal techniques used in professional theatre. They begin to take a more in-depth look at script analysis and character development. Students work on monologues, duologues and small group scenes throughout the year.

Improvisation is an important skill to all actors and and students have the opportunity to devise and perform their own pieces of theatre.

After completing this stage, students have a good knowledge of theatre practitioners and practices, particularly Stanislavski. They will leave this group with an understanding of robust and professional performance techniques, which is crucial to any professional actor. This includes key skills such as emotional recall, stage direction and acting for camera.

Teen Stage (Ages 13 – 16)

Our Teen Class is the first of our most advanced stage in the under 18s Academy, more suited to those with some prior performance experience, whether that’s through school or other theatre groups.

Each student will be treated as a young professional actor and will meet the same challenges they would face in the industry, through our training. They work on skills and techniques close to those taught in drama schools such as RADA and LAMDA.

After completing this stage, students have a thorough understanding of acting techniques including Stanislavski’s ‘Method’; the Misner Technique; Shakespeare and more. Students will also be able to apply these methodologies and techniques to their own work.

This stage is about professional results with a focus of voice, body and mind, audition technique and more advanced camera acting skills.
